Dana Cohen
Dana Cohen graduated from the Tri-State Institute of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in 1990. While there, she developed her own line of aromatherapy healing body oils which she still produces, and also began providing aromatherapy bodywork.
Dana is a Diplomate of the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine has been licensed to practice acupuncture in New York State for over ten years. In addition to private practice, Ms. Cohen's career has included providing aromatherapy bodywork in the offices of Dr. Ronald Hoffman, supervising acupuncture programs in private and public health clinics and being the Director of Alternative Therapies for a hospice within a major city hospital.
Because she was told time and again that she had "healing hands," in 2005 Dana began to re-explore hands-on bodywork. Her advanced studies with the Upledger Institute included Cranio-Sacral Therapy and Bruno Chikly's methods of Lymph Drainage Therapy. The better part of her practice now engages Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) with Acupressure and Swedish techniques. Surgeon Memhet Oz writes:
Lymphatics are the next frontier of discovery in human disease. Long ignored because of their subtlety and complexity, the mysteries of our cellular "waste disposal" system have been comprehensively deciphered by Bruno Chikly.
In Lymph Drainage Therapy, therapists work with flat hands, using all the fingers to simulate gentle, specific wave-like movements. These subtle manual maneuvers activate lymph and interstitial fluid circulation as well as stimulate the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems. It is shown that when these actions are accomplished, the results can be:
- Reduction in edemas (swelling) and lymph edemas of various origins
- Detoxification of the body
- Regeneration of tissue, including burns, wounds and wrinkles
- Anti-aging effects
- Relief of numerous chronic and sub-acute inflammations, including sinusitis, bronchitis and otitis
- Relief of chronic pain
- Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
- Anti-spastic actions to relieve conditions such as muscle hyper-tonus and some forms of constipation
- Deep relaxation to aid insomnia, stress, loss of vitality and loss of memory
- Alleviation of adipose and cellulite tissue
- Assistance with hormonally mediated problems such as PMS and male potency
- Lymph Drainage Therapy can help to prepare the body for surgery, and reduce post-surgical swelling and infections
Because all of the actions of the body at the cellular level are mediated through water, working with the "silent waters" of the body leads to systemic and remarkable transformation in many areas.
Dana's treatments combine Lymph Drainage with the application of Swedish and Shiatsu-bodywork. The long strokes and kneading in Swedish help to further circulate the substances released in LDT. Swedish kneading also provides a deeply soothing opportunity to address specific muscles tensions. Using a combination of biodynamic aromatherapy and Swedish yields lasting results, and feels great, too!
Acupressure is often applied to complete the session. This helps to retain results and connect the body's healing reservoirs or meridians, to problem areas. Jin Shin Do, where key points are held together until a release is felt, is a powerful healing tool, much like acupuncture. Jin Shin Do treatments available include the Clear Thinking Release, the Deep Breathing Release, the Shoulder Release and the Great Bridge Channel which is great for insomnia, cramps, joint stiffness and low back pain.
