FAQ

FAQ General

What can I expect on the first visit?

When you first arrive, there will be a small amount of paperwork to complete which for most people takes no more than 10 minutes. After that, you will meet with one of our practitioners for a thorough consultation, health history, and examination to determine the nature of your problem, what the best course of treatment would be, and if diagnostic testing is necessary when applicable. This usually takes between 20-30 minutes. Typically clients start treatment on the first visit. Additionally, on the first visit you can expect to meet with someone who will briefly review your insurance benefits and explain what your exact financial responsibility will be towards your care.

What insurance do you accept?

We will accept most insurance for chiropractic and physical therapy services provided it has out-of-network benefits. We do not participate in-network with most insurance companies, so unfortunately HMOs cannot be used at Giving Nature Center. Insurance policies vary greatly though, and we would be happy to verify any insurance policy to determine if it can be used at our office. If your plan has a deductible, do not be discouraged, as we have a number of payment options to make that easier for you. We do not accept Medicare or Medicaid.

Is it necessary to utilize a combination of services or can I use them individually?

Most of our patients actually seek out our Center for the very reason that we offer integrated complementary health approaches under one roof. However, not all patients are candidates for every approach. It is our job to make our best recommendations to support your healing in the shortest amount of time possible, as well as ongoing ways to maintain your health and well-being. At all times you are in charge of your own health care decisions and we will support your decisions regarding your body and your health.

FAQ Acupuncture

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points known to be effective in resolving different health problems. Modern Western science can not yet explain how acupuncture works, and yet it has been empirically shown to be effective over thousands of years in restoring and maintaining health. As acupuncture grows in popularity, an increasing number of scientific studies are underway to provide evidence of its effectiveness and elucidate its mechanisms in Western scientific terms.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is said that there is a subtle energy that vitalizes the body and is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). Acupuncture adjusts the flow of this vital energy, clearing areas where there is blockage, reducing it where it is in excess, and drawing it into areas where it is insufficient. In this way, acupuncture reestablishes balance throughout the body, and through this balance, the body is able to heal itself.

Who can benefit from acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture is beneficial to people of all ages and all stages of wellness or disease. At any stage of life the human body is able to move towards a state of greater balance and harmony, providing improved health and well-being. People suffering from a wide range of disorders can gain relief from their suffering very readily using acupuncture.

Many people receive acupuncture treatment as a way to ensure that their body will continue to maintain good health and balance. It is absolutely not necessary to wait until you have a complaint before receiving acupuncture treatment. One of the great strengths of this approach is its ability to ward off disease by resolving the effects of everyday stress that pulls the body gradually out of balance. A symptom generally arises as a last-stage of a long term accumulation of stresses and imbalances in the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, elimination of the symptom is just one piece of the overall approach. The greater value is in using acupuncture to bring the body to optimal wellness and keeping it there.

Can children be treated with acupuncture?

Children are often treated with acupuncture, massage and herbs. Many children are comfortable with acupuncture needles, which are very fine and painlessly inserted. In the treatment of children a small number of needles are used and sometimes only massage techniques are used. Children are often treated with herbal therapy, in conjunction with acupuncture or on its own. Children respond very well to Traditional Chinese Medicine and it can help them through the common childhood illnesses in a way that supports their ongoing growth and health.

Is acupuncture good for the elderly?

Using acupuncture, elderly patients are able to gain tremendous support, increased vitality, and reduction or elimination of unwanted symptoms. Very often elderly patients experience not being taken seriously when presenting with physical or mental/emotional conditions that are common at this stage of life. They are told it is normal to have these conditions as they age. Using acupuncture, many of these so-called “normal” conditions can be alleviated in the elderly. A body at any age can be brought to greater balance and harmony, and this is no less true as we grow older.

Can pregnant women receive acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine?

Acupuncture and herbs have been used for over 2,000 years to treat pregnant women. There are a number acupuncture points and selected herbs that are contraindicated during pregnancy. As long as you work with a qualified practitioner, acupuncture and herbs can help relieve various symptoms occurring during pregnancy, including morning sickness, and provide benefit to the developing fetus. Lactating mothers can also take herbal medicine safely. In fact, small babies are sometimes treated with herbs by supplying those herbs to the mother, who then makes them available to the baby through her breast milk. See our Wellness Programs for more information on treatment packages for Fertility, Pregnancy, and Postpartum.

Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a licensed acupuncturist, acupuncture is extremely safe. All needles used are sterile, disposable and used only once. There is virtually no chance of infection occurring as a result of acupuncture treatment. The needles are generally inserted from one quarter to one half inch in depth and retained in position for 15-30 minutes. Needles never touch the organs but work within the superficial layers of skin and musculature of the body. Blood vessels are flexible and tend to move aside when the fine needles are inserted. In some cases a small blood vessel may be punctured and a small bruise may appear for a few days after treatment. Occasionally, patients experience a slight light-headedness immediately after treatment which resolves within minutes.

It acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, and their insertion is virtually painless. In many cases you will not even know that the needles are in place. Once the needles are inserted, they are manipulated gently and at this time there may be a characteristic sensation of tingling, heaviness, or movement of energy along the meridian.

Trigger point release is a special form of needling that involves the stimulation of muscles to relieve painful tension and spasm. It is extremely effective in clearing muscle tension, whether from stress or injury. The sensations associated with this type of needling are unique and more pronounced. A trigger point is associated with a tight band within a muscle and it is stimulated to cause the muscle to relax. In the process, the muscle will “twitch” as it’s releasing. This is a very unusual sensation and it can be momentarily painful. The muscle will also have a characteristic “soreness” for about 24 hours after trigger point release.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required depends on the nature of your complaint. For an acute condition, a single treatment may be sufficient to resolve it. A series of four to ten treatments is found to be effective for many common complaints. Some chronic conditions may require many treatments over time.

Adjunct therapies and self-care techniques can be used to accelerate your progress and reduce the number of treatments required. This may include herbs, dietary modifications, nutritional supplementation, specific exercises, meditation and relaxation techniques, as well as self- massage or home administration of moxibustion.

Unlike conventional Western medical treatment which primarily treats illness after it arises, Chinese medicine excels in its ability to keep you in balance so that you do not get sick in the first place. It is recommended that you seriously consider including regular acupuncture “maintenance” in your health care program. By receiving periodic treatments to maintain balance in the body, you can avoid developing serious and debilitating symptoms in the future and sustain greater vitality. Some people receive monthly treatment to stay in balance. At minimum, four treatments a year at the change of seasons are very effective in supporting the immune system and keeping you healthy.

We will work with you to look at the most cost effective way to heal your condition and maintain your health, and make recommendations in accordance with your financial and time requirements.

Are there different styles of acupuncture?

There are many different styles of acupuncture. Over time, as acupuncture spread throughout Asia, the styles diverged based on different cultures and experiences. Also, it was very common in China and throughout Asia to have family lineages. These families typically developed an emphasis on one approach over another, and specific approaches to treatment were more fully developed within that lineage. All of this knowledge and experience is becoming available to us in the West. Therefore, different practitioners may utilize very different styles. Ideally, any of these approaches will have the capacity to treat your body and restore balance.

Auricular acupuncture has become widely known and involves treatment of points on the outer surface of the ear for complaints throughout the body. It is most known for its use in supporting patients who are quitting smoking or other forms of substance abuse, as well as in regulating appetite for those working on weight loss. There are many other uses for auricular acupuncture. We utilize auricular acupuncture when appropriate, often as an adjunct to body acupuncture.

In our practice we focus on Classical Chinese Acupuncture and what is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a more modern derivative of the classical approach. Additionally, we work extensively with Japanese Acupuncture as taught by Kiiko Matsumoto, and with the Acupuncture Physical Medicine approach developed by Dr. Mark Seem. Each has its own strengths and we will apply the appropriate style for your condition and temperament.

One of the most significant stylistic developments in the practice of acupuncture has occurred as it has gained popularity in the West. Traditional Chinese acupuncture tends to be applied to the patient by the doctor, with little or no explanation provided. American acupuncture, as it might be called, incorporates a greater degree of patient interaction and involvement in the process. We explain our assessment and treatment so that you can better understand and participate in your own health.

What do I need to do to prepare for acupuncture treatment?

The best thing to do is to make sure you have eaten within 2-4 hours prior to your treatment. Do not come for treatment on an empty stomach. It’s also best to avoid treatment immediately after a heavy meal. Also, do not drink alcohol prior to treatment. We provide treatment gowns so you can come dressed as you are and don’t need to worry about wearing loose-fitting clothing.

What is Chinese herbal medicine used for?

Chinese herbal formulas are used for a wide range of disorders, from the common cold and flu to allergies, indigestion, morning sickness, insomnia and hot flashes. Herbal formulas are often recommended in combination with your acupuncture treatment to increase effectiveness and accelerate progress. They can be taken at home and help to reduce the number of treatments required to resolve a condition.

How are Chinese herbs taken?

In our practice we generally use herbs that are tableted, powdered, or made into liquid tinctures. Each of these forms is easily administered and requires no preparation.

Traditionally, another form of administering Chinese herbal medicine is as a “tea” or decoction made out of the raw herbs, and this remains an option for modern patients. In our New York practice we have found that most people’s schedules don’t leave much time for the preparation of the decoctions, and many people find the odor or taste too strong. This is why we emphasize the simpler forms of administration – tablets, powders and tinctures.

The Giving Nature ® brand of herbal formulas was created to provide people with easy-to-use herbal alternatives to over-the-counter pharmaceuticals for commonly experienced health ailments. Chinese herbal medicine is so effective and potent, but in the U.S. today patients generally have to rely on a practitioner for access to these formulas. Even when they are available in a health food store we find they have Chinese names we don’t understand and therefore do not know how to use. In China, and throughout Asia, there is a wide range of commonly used formulas available to the general consumer. Giving Nature™ herbal formulas are rooted in this tradition, making this potent form of treatment more readily and widely available.

CHIROPRACTIC FAQ

What is Chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a natural method of health care that focuses on treating the cause(s) of physical problems rather than just the symptom. It is based on a simple but powerful premise that with a normally functioning spine, joints and muscles and a healthy lifestyle your body is better able to stay healthy and heal itself. Chiropractors specialize in the detection and correction of problems in the spine, muscles and other joints of the body which may not be moving correctly or functioning properly. When this happens inflammation can result, as well as pain and degeneration. When these problems are found, chiropractors use manual “hands-on” manipulation (adjusting) to help move joints and restore their normal movement patterns. Chiropractic is not only designated for spinal problems. Skilled chiropractors can treat all different types of joints in the body, some of the most common being shoulders, wrists, knees.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the care of neuromusculoskeletal (nerve, muscle and bone) conditions.

Who needs chiropractic treatments?

Not only patients who have back pain are candidates for chiropractic care. This is a very common misconception about chiropractic treatment. Anyone who demonstrates spinal segmental dysfunction (joints not moving normally, or to the extent they are supposed to) would most certainly benefit from chiropractic care. Interestingly, this often does not produce pain or symptoms for years, but can be detected early through a number of different methods that chiropractors frequently employ. This can actually prevent degeneration and arthritis that would otherwise have occurred later in life and produced pain and restriction of movement.

When can I expect to start feeling some positive results?

Again, that depends on a number of factors like the severity of condition, age and healing ability, and compliance with your individualized treatment plan and recommendations. We schedule regular follow-up visits with all our patients so we can closely monitor your progress. If it seems you are not progressing as quickly as we would expect, we may make changes to the treatment plan, recommend further testing, or refer to a specialist with whom we work closely. While we cannot predict how quickly a patient will respond, if you are accepted as a patient in our office, we do expect progress, and will not allow treatment to continue indefinitely if we are not seeing it.

Does chiropractic care hurt?

For the most part chiropractic is a painless and very effective way of treating spinal and other non-spinal problems. Like any health care intervention, some methods can be temporarily uncomfortable. Sometimes there may be post-treatment soreness, although mild, but in the long run you feel better overall.

Can chiropractic care help my arthritis?

Yes,arthritis is an extremely common condition affecting the cartilage in-between two bones. This cartilage provides shock absorbing properties in order to distribute the weight of gravity in our bodies. In arthritic conditions the fluid within the cartilage tends to dry out. When this happens the friction between the two joints increases.

There is no direct blood supply to cartilage, the only way cartilage maintains its fluid contents is through motion. Cartilage needs movement in order to have fluid pumped into it. When a joint becomes stiff or arthritic, the lack of movement in that joint worsens the condition because now there is no fluid being mechanically pumped to the cartilage. Chiropractors use adjusting, (a manual “hands-on” therapy) in order to restore normal range of motion and increase the fluid that the joint can receive. Combine this with exercise and proper nutrition and we can achieve outstanding results.

Will my insurance cover chiropractic care?

Many insurance companies cover chiropractic care to some extent. Some policies are better than others. Some require a primary care physician referral, but for the most part most people have access to chiropractic care. We will be happy to check your benefits. We accept most insurance provided that it allows for out-of-network service.

If you do not have insurance coverage, chiropractic care is still an affordable therapy to pay for out-of-pocket. The fact that there is no surgery and no invasive procedures involved keep the cost of care reasonable as opposed to conventional medical treatment.

It is also important to note that your car insurance and Worker’s Compensation fully cover chiropractic care regardless of whether or not your personal insurance covers the incident. If you are hurt on the job you have the right to seek care from a chiropractor. Chiropractic care has been proven to get people back to work faster at half the cost after work-related injuries.

Can a Chiropractor prescribe medication?

No, just like a primary care physician can’t do dentistry, and a dentist can’t adjust your neck, chiropractors specialize in hands-on drugless treatment; thus medication is not part of the schooling and we do not prescribe. We firmly believe that most patients need a primary care physician and thus we encourage you to work hand-in-hand with your own physician.

Do children need chiropractic care?

At Giving Nature Center we specialize in holistic health care for children. Many of the common ailments of childhood can be addressed through chiropractic care, including ear infections, injuries, headaches, digestive ailments and more. All of these conditions can respond very well to chiropractic care and we are happy to discuss this option with parents. Kids tend to like chiropractic because its pain free, drug free and a fun experience all around.

One important aspect to remember is that many problems that are seen in adults actually start from traumas that occurred as children. Even mild traumas can have a lasting effect. We have a saying in health care that “your body keeps score.” Small problems add up over the years, and it’s best to catch them early.

What conditions can be treated with Chiropractic care?

A wide variety of conditions can be effectively treated using Chiropractic care, including:

• Chronic and acute muscle pain

• Low Back Pain

• Neck and shoulder girdle pain

• Headaches – tension and migraine

• Whiplash

• Sciatica

• Pain associated with arthritis

• Shoulder joint pain – rotator cuff syndrome

• Knee and Foot pain

• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome/symptoms

• Sprains and strains

• Nutritional counseling & exercise prescription

• Internal imbalances in the nervous system, digestive system, upper respiratory system, reproductive system, liver, kidneys, and more

• Pregnancy related musculoskeletal pain
