Smoking Cessation

Acupuncture is effective in helping you quit smoking.

There are two aspects to quitting - the physical addiction, and the habit itself. Acupuncture helps your body overcome the physical addiction and craving for cigarettes. To be successful, you need to be committed to quitting and prepare for how you will replace the habit with other activities.

By reducing cravings and balancing the nervous system, blood sugar, and nervous system, acupuncture helps you overcome the addiction to cigarettes within a few days.

Our smoking cessation program starts with a consultation prior to your first day of quitting. In that visit you are given an acupuncture treatment and we discuss the treatment plan for successfully quitting smoking.

We follow this with a treatment on your first day without cigarettes, and 4 more treatments in quick succession over the next 3 weeks. Within the first 3-5 days you will have overcome your addictive cravings for cigarettes. The additional treatments continue to balance your nervous system, and support your physical, mental and emotional well-being so that you can easily sustain your commitment to remain free from cigarettes.

Smoking cigarettes, while it is known to be harmful to your health, is often a kind of self-care ritual that you use for relaxation or just some time to yourself. Often it is associated with comfort and can be linked to many of your routines - having a cup of coffee, having a drink, taking a break with co-workers. It is important to consider new ways to provide yourself with the needed relaxation and breaks when you stop smoking. You may also need to plan to vary your routine at the beginning of quitting in order to remove some of the triggers to smoking. For example, you might consider drinking tea instead of coffee for a few weeks, having some healthy snacks handy, taking a walk with a friend when you might otherwise have sat to have a drink together.

When you decide to stop smoking, call our office to schedule an initial appointment in advance of your chosen start date. We will discuss the smoking cessation treatment plan, give you an initial treatment, and help you prepare. The recommended treatment protocol is as follows:

  • Initial treatment prior to your chosen start date for quitting smoking.
  • Acupuncture on day 1 (your first day without cigarettes) and twice more within the first week.
  • One session in week two.
  • One session in week three.

Within the first 5 days, with the support of acupuncture, you will have moved through the initial physical withdrawal from cigarettes. Following that, additional sessions are scheduled in weeks two and three to continue balancing your body and help you resist the tendency to pick up cigarettes again.

Acupuncture works by balancing your system, and stimulating hormone release that allows you to withdraw from the physical addiction to nicotine. It also calms the nervous system and reduces stress which can be one of the triggers that make you pick up a cigarette.

Once you have quit smoking, acupuncture can help your body clear the dryness and heat that has accumulated in the lungs, to support their healing. It can also support you by relieving stress and regulating metabolism to avoid weight gain that often follows smoking cessation.

Herbal therapy may also be used.
